Solid Disk Drives (SSD) are innovative storage solutions that are slowly beginning to find their way into notebook computing. While still relatively pricey, SSDs do truly offer an enhanced mobile experience. SSDs have a faster seek time, consume less power, and are more reliable. Because there’s no moving parts, there’s less likelihood that something will break and fail like in your traditional hard disk drive. And because of this, the disk doesn’t need additional power to be spinning, thus less noise and more battery life.

Lenovo has been a pioneer and has incorporated a handful of Samsung solid disk drives into its ThinkPad line of notebooks. The X300, X301, X200, T400 notebooks all offer system configurations with SSDs. For Mobile workstations, the Lenovo ThinkPad W500 and W700 have SSD options as well.

Typically when people think of workstations, the image of a large computer desktop machine comes to mind. Similarly, the same thing can be said for servers. High powered computing machines do not also come in such large forms. There are actually mobile solutions, especially for those needing their workstations to be mobile.

Until now, the most common form of a mobile workstation came as a Macbook Pro. These notebooks are used primarily for graphic enthusiasts and they do server their purpose. Macbook Pros are just powerful enough to handle the computing requirements of a workstation, but much is left to be desired in terms of features and functionalities.

Lenovo has come out with an alternative that brings mobile workstations more on par with their desktop counterparts. Meet the ThinkPad W700. The ThinkPad W700 brings to the user many more options and hardware configurations that the Apple Macbook Pro doesn’t even come close to bringing. With a Lenovo ThinkPad W700, you can bump up your processor to a quad core, load up on as much as 8 gb of memory, fit in multiple hds in RAID configurations, and run Nvidia’s reputable QuadroFX graphics processors. These are just some that put the ThinkPad W700 is the ultimate mobile workstation solution.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X300 took on Apple’s Macbook Air when it first came out. Though the X300 came close in the size of it’s form factor, the ThinkPad blew the Macbook Air away in terms of options and functionalities.

Now there’s a new Lenovo ThinkPad which is bidding to close the gap even more, at least in terms of size. The Lenovo ThinkPad X200 notebooks are out and boy are they ever small and thin. These 12.1″ notebooks are light weight notebooks have lost their optical drive like the Macbook Air to achieve a much more trim profile. the ThinkPad X200 continues the X300′s focus on mobility and extended battery life.

Much like the X300, there is an option to swap in a solid state drive in replacement of the standard 250 gb hard disk drive. With the release of Intel’s new Centrino 2 platform, the X200 will incorporate these new innovations into their notebooks. One will also find that the ThinkPad X200 has moved to the new and much smaller 45nm Penryn architecture.

Like most Lenovo ThinkPads, the chassis is made up of a magnesium alloy frame and reinforced by a carbon fibre roll cage to protect all your components inside. You can also choose from a tablet pc version of the X200.
